The new generation of pinoys have forgotten a great fighter in the boxing world. Many talk about the current status of the famous Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao but we never see such articles of the legendary Gabriel "Flash" Elorde. Gabby, his nickname, got his first international recognition by bagging the Orient Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) Bantamweight championship in October 18, 1952 and finishing his career as a World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Featherweight champion of both prestigious international boxing bodies.
This southpaw young lad from Bogo, Cebu, with a solid and lightning quick punch that earned him the nickname Flash, was undefeated in his early part of his career which brought him fame and at the same time glory and recognition to the Philippines. His manager Lope Sarreal once said that Gaby will be the greatest fighter the Philippines will have and it became through as Elorde got into the Boxing Hall of Fame and the first Pinoy to accomplish this feat. His contributions to boxing will always be remembered with his talents and techniques are being applied as a medium of teaching to young and upcoming boxers at the Elorde Gym. A great and phenomenal boxer like Gaby will always be in our hearts and hope that his legacy should always be taught to the new boxing students.
